We picked a popular website, (I chose YouTube), and reverse-engineer it to create an approximation of what the company's internal database looks like, using SQL. The database is taught us first-hand experience of creating functional dependencies, and creating databases in Third and Boyce-Codd Normal Form. The databases were hosted on an AWS Ubuntu VM, giving us experience with Linux commands and cloud-computing/data retreival.
